I stare out the window next to me and the gloom outside heavily weighs on my soul. I cannot help but think of a place more beautiful, calm. I see this place and I imagine curling up with a good book or a pencil in my hand and my journal in my lap. Perfect.

The Tweet Joy of Rhetoric

Hello Diary Readers,

I have always viewed twitter to be a worthless use of time, but to amazement, i have just tweeted for the first time. Yeah I have heard it is a great way to find information and a wonderful way to blog quickly and efficiently but for me, it’s not something I would like to be apart of. On the positive side, it is a great way to communicate with other people and it allows a person’s name to be digitally known throughout the internet. For me, I’ve heard a lot of people are on twitter just to follow celebaties and games they like. I feel like those types of people to have one but for personalized blogs, I feel like facebook would be a better home.

Rhetoric is the use of persuasion to communicate with people. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are three ways to persuade and I feel that this is a great way for celebs to communicate. The rhetoric they develop can work on an audience and is a great way for them to communicate. It allows the audience to understand and become interested.

Citizen or Not?

Hello Diary Readers,

What is a citizen? Based off of Westherimer and Khane’s (W&K) “What Kind of Citizen? The Politics of Educating for Democracy”, there are only three types. After participating in class and using new technology, I have learned that I am not just one type of citizen. I’ve donated to food drives and obeyed the laws, labeling me as a personally responsible citizen. I’ve organized blood drives being a participatory citizen and I’ve researched, organized, and participated in 30 Hour Famine (helps raise money for starving children around the world) making me a justice oriented, participatory, and personally responsible citizen all in one project. Other times I’ve sat back and watched others do the work. So where do I stand as a citizen? Does it change after a certain amount of time? And what about the group that does nothing? Are they too citizens? Since I participate on facebook, tumblr, and other media sources while others do not, does that make me a better citizen? As citizens we are supposed to “act responsibly in [the] community… actively participate in the civic affairs and the social life of the community at the local, state, and national levels… [and] argue that effective democratic citizens need opportunities to analyze the interplay of social, economic, and political forces.” Unlike W&K, I do not believe there is a way to pin point a good citizen. People live to flow through life. I believe I am a good citizen although I do not fit inĀ  nice ‘package’ that expresses W&K’s thoughs and I plan to use media to help me be a citizen while also enjoying life.
